I haven’t been able to post much advice on the blog in the past couple of days, a lot of work has piled up on my lap that needs to be taken care of before I can commit myself to writing extended articles.
That being said I have some things up my sleeve that I would like to share with you lovely folks. Just like before I will post a prompt, and the story I’ve written for that prompt. Hopefully, some of you will do the same and share your work in the comments section. I would love to go over and offer some feedback for whatever you do!
The prompt was simple enough:
Write a story in under 250 words that has a super precise focus around a single event in time. Provide many concrete details surrounding the scene. Again, the aim here is to provide a glimpse into what is actually happening. A hint of a potential background. It does not need to be a fully fleshed out scene.
Here is my version:
I died today.
Shot in the face point blank with a sawed off shotgun. I might have deserved it too, who can say?
The man who did it had a tattoo of overlapping green scaled snakes coiling over each other, wrapping their way up the length of his exposed forearm before disappearing beneath the frayed edge of his oversized brown coat. He had these fat rings with red and green gems and golden bands around each of his fingers which were curled around the grip of the firearm.
My murderer pulled the smoking barrel back as my body collapsed at his feet – blood pooling around his perfectly laced dress shoes with scuffed and rubbery soles. His hat flew off his head, round brimmed and formal. I think they are called bowler hats, I don’t know for certain though. It suited him well enough, I suppose. The brief glimpse I got of his face will always stick with me, well as long as it can. I’ll be dead in few short seconds. He had a clean shaven jawline, with the highest cheek bones I’d ever seen, and his eyes were closed. A streak of blood – probably mine – splattered against his pale white skin. His shoulder length brown hair was tied back in a simple tail with a black cloth.
My thoughts lingered on that precise detail before fading into oblivion.
